L & A Baptist Church History

The L & A Baptist Church was erected on June 13, 1908. It was named after the Louisiana and Arkansas Railroad. The location was chosen because it was near the train stop. The land for the church was donated by Mr. Buchana, the owner of the Tall Timber Mill. The founding deacons were A.L. Avington, clerk, W.M. Fleeks, W.M. Ross, A.D. Johnson and P.R. Roland. Reverend J.W. Sims was the first elected pastor, followed by Reverend R. Green, Reverend Grimble, Reverend Judd Newman, Reverend H.Y. Bell, Reverend Dave Mays, Reverend Jimmy Young, and presently Reverend Chauncey M. Hardy.

L & A Chapel Baptist Church organized several auxilaries including Sunday School, Mission, Baptist Training Union, Singing Choir, Usher Board, Deacon Board, Church Aide Club, and Mother's Club. Each week Prayer Meeting, BTU, Mission, and Teacher's meeting were held. In the early years of the Church revival was held for two weeks, and communion was served each month.

Reverend H.Y. Bell was elected on September 12, 1939 as pastor and served until 1968. During his tenure several Deacons were ordained and the church membership increased. The Sunday School department continued to thrive with high attendance. Church repairs were completed under his leadership.

Reverend Dave Mays was Pastor from 1968 to January 2007. During his Pastorship, Revival was held each year and then went to a community Revival with the local churches in this area. Many souls were baptized and the membership grew. The church auxilaries continued to flourish in membership and service to the community. Watch Night Service, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day Service were held each year. Renovation was completed on the back of the church and a baptismal pool was installed. A/C-Heating Units, new pews, and carpet was installed. The entrance of the church was remodeled adding handicap accessibility with rails. A new fellowship hall was built and furnished. The church purchased a church bus a later a church van. Pastor Mays resigned after 38 years of faithful service.

Reverend Jimmy Ray Young was elected Pastor in August of 2007 and installed by the Little River Baptist Association with Reverend Wilmore "Jackie" Long presiding the service on September 22, 2007. Pastor Young's vision was to teach and preach the word of God to this body of believers with simplicity and that we become as he is (Christ). As we become more like Christ, we will be equipped to win the last, the lost, and least into the body of Christ: to teach spiritual maturity that we grow in grace; and that the L & A Baptist Church will be a bright and shining light for the Lord. With Pastor Young's vision, L & A spiritual activities included Morning Worship services each Sunday, Bible Study on each Monday, Prayer Service each Wednesday, and Women's Ministry, Men's Focus (Brotherhood), Pastor's Choir, and Male Chorus were organized. The Youth Ministry was revamped to include a Youth Minister. L & A hosted a yearly Youth Back to School Revival with community youth providing music and a Fun Day on the Saturday following the close of the revival. Numerous souls were saved and baptized. L & A worshipped with Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee for Family and Friends Day, with Temple Baptist Church for Pre-Thanksgiving service, and continued the Community Fifth Sunday Fellowship. L & A became a member of the LaSalle Ministerial Alliance. The Fellowship Hall was re-built after Hurricane Rita, heater was purchased for the Baptismal Pool, new organ, new A/C units for the church and fellowship hall, new church sign constructed, new church van, and many other items were replaced or purchased. Pastor Young served faithfully until his untimely death in August 2020.

Reverend Chauncey M. Hardy was elected as Pastor on May 29, 2001 and installed on June 18, 2021. Pastor Hardy resumed weekly service after the COVID-19 Pandemic per CDC guidelines, restarted weekly Bible Study on Wednesday night, and updated the Ministries with additions. The Fellowship hall was remodeled with a face lift, painting, and conference room, new round tables and chairs, and HVAC unit purchased and added. A new HVAC unit was installed in the church, a new covered porch in front of the church, a deck and cover to the back of the fellowship hall, a porch in the rear of the fellowship hall, and installed gutters on the fellowship hall. The church continues to grow and thrive under Reverend Hardy's leadership as the Lord gives him the VISION.
